Social roles are the part people play as members of a social group. With each social role you adopt, your behaviour changes to fit the expectations both you and others have of that role. For example, you will act in a different way for people who acknowledge you as different social roles. Each social role carries expected behaviors called norms.

Gender roles are the product of the interactions between individuals and their environments, and they give individuals cues about what sort of behavior is be- lieved to be appropriate for what sex. Appropriate gender roles are defined according to a society's beliefs about differences between the sexes.

Masculine and feminine cultures and individuals generally differ in how they communicate with others. Likewise, feminine people tend to communicate more affection, and with greater intimacy and confidence than masculine people.
